The mission of Special Olympics Oklahoma is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities [mental retardation], giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Special Olympics Oklahoma serves over 9,200 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Oklahoma. Statistics show that there are over 75,000 people in Oklahoma with intellectual disabilities. Our goal is to educate every person with intellectual disabilities about the benefits of the Special Olympics program and help them live healthier lives.

Special Olympics Oklahoma is a movement dedicated to providing people with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to achieve. Special Olympics is not just about athletic competitions. The movement is also about working together with others, gaining self-confidence and learning additional skills that make it possible for Special Olympics athletes to become significant and productive citizens of our communities. Special Olympics really is a growing movement that creates a lasting and positive imprint across virtually every segment of our society and in the hearts of everyone it touches. Special Olympics is training for life.

Special Olympics was created by the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation for persons with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Oklahoma is not funded by this foundation. Special Olympics Oklahoma currently receives no funds from federal or state grants and is not a United Way Agency. Special Olympics Oklahoma is designated a non-profit organization under the IRS Code Section 501(c)(3). Special Olympics Oklahoma is 100% dependent on private gifts from individuals, businesses, civic groups, corporations and foundations to ensure a solid program of training and competition for local, area and state events. Financial contributions are essential to the continued growth and expansion of our program.
